But one fabled device has left scientists speculating on its existence for hundreds of years — the death ray. For his 2022 science project, Sener recreated the Archimedes screw, a device for raising and moving water. Sener found the death ray to be one of the more intriguing devices — sometimes referred to as the heat ray. Archimedes’ death ray is more commonly speculated to have been an array of several mirrors or polished shields. Sener’s mom, Melanie, was not surprised by her son’s choice in science project.

The service will launch this fall and cater to sports fans who don't subscribe to the traditional cable bundle. One person associated with the launch of the new venture told CNBC the platform will be "a monster" and massively disrupt cable TV. Cable TV has been relegated to an add-on that helps keep people subscribing to high-speed internet. The cable bundle has largely survived because it still contains exclusive live news and sports. Previously, the only way for cord cutters to get ESPN outside the cable bundle would have been that coming service.

There were just 57 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks last year, out of a global population of 8 billion, five of which were fatal. However, some places around the world have much higher rates of shark attacks than others, with the numbers rising with the passing years. Let’s take a look at the locations worldwide with the highest rates of shark attacks between 2012 and 2021 and the reasons they’ve become hot spots. South Africa (29 bites)South Africa had 29 unprovoked shark bites between 2012 and 2021, of which six were fatal. South Carolina (45 bites)None of the 45 unprovoked attacks in South Carolina in the decade-long time frame were fatal.

Sharks might be consuming drugs that are dumped off the Florida coast, scientists say. An upcoming Shark Week episode will investigate whether the drugs are impacting the animals. The scientists observed unusual behavior from some sharks, including one fixating on an imaginary object. If these cocaine bales are a point source of pollution, it's "very plausible" sharks can be affected by this chemical, Fanara said. The scientists created packages that resembled cocaine bales and dropped them into the water to see how the sharks would respond.

In September, a Discovery Channel film crew traveled to Paradise, Mich., searching for two French naval ships that disappeared in 1918. But on a voyage to find them, they stumbled upon another shipwreck that was four decades older. “Finding the Satellite was hugely exciting and unexpected,” said Mr. Gates. On June 21, 1879, the 15-year-old Satellite was on a routine trip to Duluth, Minn., from Detroit, and towing four schooner barges when it sprang a leak. “She gained on us an inch a minute,” he wrote, adding that “there was no logs” in “the way we came.”

The search area for the missing submersible stretches about two times the size of Connecticut on the surface and goes down as deep as two-and-a-half miles, according to Frederick. We need a miracle – but miracles do happen,” oceanographer and water search expert David Gallo told CNN. However, it remains unclear whether the noises are from the missing submersible, Frederick said. David Marquet, a former submarine captain, described Wednesday what he imagines the five passengers are experiencing in the Titan submersible. OceanGate Expeditions strayed from industry norms by declining a voluntary, rigorous safety review of the vessel, according to an industry leader.

Rescuers in a remote area of the Atlantic Ocean raced against time early Tuesday to find a missing submersible carrying five people on a mission to document the wreckage of the Titanic. OceanGate's expeditions to the Titanic wreck site include archaeologists and marine biologists. Gallo identified Nargeolet, a friend who has led multiple expeditions to the Titanic, on Tuesday during an interview with CNN. OceanGate hired the Polar Prince to ferry dozens of people and the submersible craft to the North Atlantic wreck site. CBS journalist David Pogue, who went on the trip last year, noted his vessel got turned around looking for the Titanic.
